What a hood cleaning label should show.

NFPA 96 calls for a label in the kitchen after cleaning that shows the date cleaned, the servicing company, and any areas not cleaned. The sticker is the short version of the job. The full report holds the photos, deficiencies, and access notes behind it.

  • Servicing company name and a phone number the kitchen can call.
  • Date serviced and the next service due date.
  • Areas not cleaned, so the next crew and the inspector see them first.
  • A job number that matches the report, so the sticker points to the full record.
  • Technician credentials where the customer or jurisdiction asks for them.

State and city rules can be stricter

Some jurisdictions prescribe the label itself. Massachusetts sets the content, size, color, and numbering of hood labels through the State Fire Marshal (label requirements, PDF). In New York City, FDNY sets the rangehood decal rules, including the stamp of the Certificate of Fitness holder who did the work (decal changes, PDF).

Working in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts requires hood labels of at least 4.25 x 5.5 inches, pre-printed with a serial number and punched for the service date. This 3x5 sticker is too small there.

What this sticker does not replace

This free template is a documentation aid. It is not a certification, does not replace the NFPA 96 standard, and does not guarantee acceptance by an AHJ, insurer, customer, or fire marshal.

Confirm the adopted edition and any local label rules with the authority having jurisdiction before relying on a sticker format.
